Herman Melville (1819-1891): An American novelist, short-story writer and poet, his early experiences as a sailor, including service on a whaler, imprisonment for mutiny, and captivity among cannibals, are reflected in his early novels. His masterpiece is Moby Dick (1851), a complex and symbolic narrative in which Captain Ahab leads his whaling crew in a doomed quest for the white whale that bit off his leg.
